North East Tory MPs have said Liz Truss ‘delivered’ in her ‘great’ first conference speech as Prime Minister, but Labour have said many in the region will be ‘utterly perplexed’ as to 'what planet the Government is living on'.

Ms Truss went into her first Conservative Party conference as Prime Minister hoping for a faction-uniting celebration of her tax-cutting agenda.

But it was not the jamboree she had hoped for, with Cabinet members breaking rank, publicly criticising each other and accusing Tory colleagues of staging a “coup”.

The Northern Echo:

Simon Clarke, Conservative MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and Levelling Up Secretary, said: "A great Conference speech by Liz Truss.

"We are the Party that will deliver the economic growth that makes people better off and is the only way to support strong public services - both of which are fundamental to levelling up."

Jacob Young, Conservative MP for Redcar, said: "Letting working people keep more of their money is the right thing to do to help ease the cost of living, go for growth and get Britain moving.

The Northern Echo:

"The Prime Minister said she would cut taxes for people and businesses across the country, and she has delivered."

Mary Foy, Labour MP for Durham City, said: “People in the North East, including many who voted Tory for the first time in 2019, will be utterly perplexed as to what planet Liz Truss and her Government are living on.

The Northern Echo:

“As our public services and economy collapse around her, after 12 years of Conservative cuts and chaos Liz Truss offered no new plan but to further slash public services to pay for her economy crashing tax cuts.

“The concerns of people in County Durham appear alien to the Prime Minister, instead she is hellbent on curbing working people’s rights to negotiate better pay, during a cost of living crisis- proving she simply does not recognise the fact our economy is built from the bottom up.

“This speech showed a Government out of ideas, and out of touch with working people. It's no wonder people are demanding ‘when can we get her out of office?’”
