The school of Tomasz Oleszak, 14, has issued a statement for the first time on his tragic death in a North East nature park.

Brendan Robson, Headteacher at Cardinal Hume Catholic School, has called the incident in which Tomasz Oleszak, 14, from Gateshead died yesterday "devastating."

Tomasz Oleszak died in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning after an alleged incident at Whitehills Nature Park in Gateshead on Monday.

Northumbria Police confirmed it had been made aware of a teenager who had been seriously injured in the Aycliffe Crescent area of the Springwell Estate at 8pm.

The Northern Echo:

Mr Robson, issuing a statement on behalf of the school, said: "We are devastated to hear of this tragic incident involving one of our students.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

"As a school we are doing all we can to support our students and everyone in our community who is affected; we are also supporting the police with their ongoing enquiries."

Northumbria Police said in a statement Tomasz had suffered an injury consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

He was taken to hospital where, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he sadly passed away.

This comes as pictures from the scene yesterday showed flowers and tributes laid near to a nature reserve, where police were scene combing the area.
