SCHOOL pupils, together with parents and staff, took to the deep and donned scuba gear on an action-packed diving course.

The group of 22, from Cundall Manor School, near Thirsk, completed the final phase of various diving qualifications.

The group, including 16 pupils and five parents, travelled to the dive centre at Capernwray in the Lake District for the course, which was the culmination of training undertaken over the last two terms.

Organiser Damian Chubb, the head of upper school, said: "It was a great two days and a wonderful experience for everyone.

As the course progressed, the development in skills and growth in confidence by the youngsters was tremendous, while for parents it was the chance to take part in an activity with their son or daughter, and learn a new skill."

The course was run by Sue and Steve Grainger of York-based Overland Underwater.

"This is something which will last them a lifetime," said Steve.

"As well as enjoying diving, it opens up additional career options. For example, if they choose to do a gap year, they may be able to find work at a dive centre.

"Also they may now be inspired to consider a career as a marine biologist or a marine archaeologist."
