A person was taken to hospital and two others were treated at the scene of a crash on the A19 near Seaham this afternoon.

The North East Ambulance Service took one person to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Durham Police was also on the scene where a car and van crashed, which led to a road closure of two hours in total.

The incident occurred just before 1:30pm on the A19 near the Murton Interchange today (Tuesday, October 4).

One lane on the A19 was closed for two hours as police and emergency services were at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: “We were called shortly before 1.30pm to a collision between a van and car on the A19 northbound near to the Murton junction. One lane is currently closed to allow recovery of the vehicles.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 1.32pm this afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 junction with the B1285 in Seaham.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, one specialist paramedic, one advanced practitioner paramedic, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). Two patients were treated and discharged on the scene, and another was taken to the Sunderland Royal Hospital for further treatment.”

The road was reopened at approximately 3:20pm
