A teenager has died in hospital this morning after an attack in a North East nature park, police have confirmed.

Northumbria Police have confirmed a boy has died after suffering injuries in an attack at Whitehills Nature Park in Gateshead.

Northumbria police have launched a murder investigation, and have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of murder.

Police have said the boy's family are being supported by specially-trained officers at this devastating time.

He remains in custody alongside a 13-year-old girl arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Police taped off the entrances to Whitehills Nature Park as they searched the area.

Police had gathered outside the nature park as they searched the area, with it reported there was a large presence on Aycliffe Crescent.

There were flowers and cards left at the scene for the boy locally named as 'Tom'.
