Viewers of BBC’s Look North got a surprise when they tuned in for the nightly programme on Monday (October 3) evening when there was a new face on the sofa.
Jeff Brown introduced the new host for the sports segment as the programme’s ‘new signing’ Michael Bridges.
Eagle-eyed viewers and sport fans were quick to recognise the latest addition to the line-up as former Sunderland and Newcastle player Michael Bridges.

The 44-year-old, who was born in North Shields and played for Sunderland from 1995 until 1999 when he moved to Leeds United. He was no stranger to the North East during his footballing career, also playing for Newcastle on loan in 2004.

Bridges also spent time in Australia, playing for the Newcastle Jets soccer team in New South Wales, as manager for Edgeworth FC until 2021, and also appearing as a pundit on Australian TV.
Viewers were quick to praise the new host for his debut appearance.
Posting on Twitter one viewer said: “Well done Michael you did great mate. Just be yourself that's enough mate. Welcome back to the North East.”

Another added: “Did a great job.”
While others were keen to reminisce about his days playing in the North East, with another viewer adding: “I’m a Rangers fan but went to the odd Sunderland game with an army friend who’s a Mackem when Bridges burst onto the scene at Roker Park. Unbelievable skill and technique. Another one ruined by injuries unfortunately costing him an England career.”
The Northern Echo has approached the BBC to confirm whether Bridges will be making a return to the programme.
