As a huge fan of Kaiser Chiefs, I had been looking forward to see the Leeds five-piece at their Homecoming gig for sometime now. Even if it was going to be the fifth time I've seen them live! I had high hopes of this concert due to the fact that the Kaiser Chiefs are known for their highly energetic performances.

Arriving at midday, we decided to start queing even if the doors of Elland Road (Leeds United Football Club Stadium, and also the venue of this concert) didn't open until 3 pm. While waiting in line the excitement began to grow. And following the opening of the doors, people swarmed in to get the best spot. Luckily, I managed to secure myself a place at the barrier. Here I would stay for 9 hours!

Opening the event at 4.20 were Friendly Fires. Opening on Photobooth', the four-piece from St. Albans then performed a set of a dancey post-punk mix of energetic guitars, bleeps and synths, as the crowd on the football pitch and in Elland Road's stands began to grow. Combined with humorous dancing, Friendly Fires created a great atmopsphere for the day.

Hot on the heels of Friendly Fires were The Young Knives. After opening with their signature tune 'Weekends And Bleak Days', frontman Henry Dartnall joked:"Who's looking forward to the Custard Chefs? I know I am!". Playing tune after tune, the Oxford trio certainly wowed the crowd even if only the front rows of the crowd were dancing!

Kate Nash was the next artist to take to the stage, and she rattled through a sped-up selection of her songs. Switching between both piano and acoustic guitar a mass sing-a-long ensued when Kate played crowd faviourites including Foundations', Mouthwash' and Pumpkin Soup'. Having finally seen Kate Nash live I now have a new love for this lady. Each track was lively and summery, and the piano-pop was a a cheerful interlude between the rest of the guitar-based bands.

A great surprise for the audience then came in the form of the lovable Radio 1 presenter (and Leeds fan), Chris Moyles surprised the crowd by appearing on stage to introduce the next act, The Enemy. Having only heard a few tracks by this band before, I certainly now want to hear more. Confirming that everyone was chanting, YORKSHIRE!', The Enemy played a staggering set of crowd-pleasers, ensuing that every member of the audience were participating in moving around and getting warmed for the Headlining band.

If the day couldn't get any better, a second appearance from Chris Moyles brought another surprise. That came in the form of the super-producer Mark Ronson. For the next 40 minutes, he was ready to DJ before the Kaisers began their set. Arriving on stage brought a raptuous applause and his mix of tracks including The White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army', Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', Franz Ferdinand's 'Take Me Out' and his own collaboration with Amy Winehouse on 'Valerie', built up the atmosphere for the rest to come.

Taking the stage to loud football-style chants from the audience, the band ironically kicked off their biggest ever gig (35,000 fans) with 'Everything Is Average Nowadays'. As the skies darkened, the stage lit up to hightend the bands performance. Tearing through hit after hits, the band decided to debut a few new songs a treat to the gig-goers. New songs included 'Never Miss a Beat' and 'You Want History', which included a special performance form Mark Ronson on tambourine. Other highlights included a duet of Modern Way' between Ricky Wilson (the frontman of the Kaiser Chiefs) and Ryan Jarman (from The Cribs, a fellow Yorkshireman) and the main crowd-pleaser, I Predict a Riot'. An audience chant of The Angry Mob' ended the first half of this glorious event. Coming back after for a four song encore, the audience went wild. Before playing the well titled Thank You Very Much', the band thanked the people of Leeds and thanked the audience for making this the best ever Kaiser Chiefs gig! The closing song, 'Oh My God' united the crowd in chorus and flooded the crowd in yellow light. The set then ended to Glory, Glory, Leeds United', while people made their way slowly and very exhaustedly out of the stadium. While leaving the stadium, I reflected on the fact that this momentous occasion was sadly at an end. I left the venue with a fantastic sense of pleasure in seeing one of my faviourite bands play their best ever performance. The great thing with the Kaiser Chiefs is that they never fail to let you down. This certainly was shown tonight as the audience loved every minute of this event. No matter how many gigs I will go to this year, Kaiser Chiefs at Elland Road will certainly go down as one fo the best!
