POLICE have revealed that eight people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly at an open air music festival attended by 40,000 people.

The seventh Evolution festival was held on both banks of the Quayside in Newcastle and Gateshead on Monday.

The crowds were entertained by musical stars such as Duffy, Kate Nash and The Streets at Spillers Wharf and Baltic Square.

But open air drinking did the get the better of some and they were taken away in police van.

One young man was robbed of cash from his wallet as he stood with two friends near the Pitcher and Piano pub on the Newcastle side.

Police chased and caught the thief but do not know who the victim was.

They are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

In total, two people were arrested for theft and another for assault.

Organisers have called the event a 'massive success'.

Paul Flower, of Profound Media and Management said: "Everyone is overjoyed with how well it went. We were lucky with the weather and the crowds seemed to really enjoy the acts.

"We are very pleased so are now looking forward to next year."
