PROPOSALS have been put forward to build a new 50-bed nursing home together with industrial and office units on the site of a disused factory.

But opponents say the scheme "flies in the face" of a campaign against increased traffic and industrialisation in the area on the edge of Thirsk.

And planning officials are urging councillors to reject the application when they meet to discuss it later this week.

Developers want to build on the site of an empty factory off Station Road in Thirsk, near the town's racecourse.

As well as the three-storey, L-shaped nursing home there would be four industrial units and five office units.

Thirsk Town Council wants to see the scheme thrown out, pointing out that it goes against their recent successful campaign against further industrialisation of Station Road becoming part of the area's planning blueprint.

They also object to the design of the nursing home, describing it as a collection of dormitory-type bedrooms.

The neighbouring parish council at Carlton Miniott is also against the scheme, citing the design of the nursing home, further industrialisation of Station Road and the traffic impact.

Hambleton planning officials say the scheme would be contrary to the Local Development Framework for the area and the scale of the development would not respect its surroundings.

They also claim it would have an "unacceptable" affect on the amenity of nearby residents.
