Wetherspoon yesterday revealed the fate of its staff in a number of North East pubs put up for sale – including in County Durham.

The pub giant said its staff currently employed in two of their pubs – in Durham and Middlesbrough – will be retained and moved across their other North East venues.

This comes after the announcement yesterday morning that the chain had put these two pubs up for sale along with 32 others across the UK.

A Wetherspoon spokesperson confirmed there would be no redundancies as part of the sale process, adding: “If either or both of the pubs are sold, then staff will be retained by Wetherspoon and employed at other pubs in the region.”

CBRE and Savills have been appointed to market the pubs, which are in town and city centre locations, The Caterer reports.

Yesterday, Mr Gershon said this move was for commercial reasons and the retailer understands that customers and staff will be disappointed with this.

He added: “The pubs will continue to operate as Wetherspoon outlets until they are sold."

Toby Hall, senior director at CBRE, said: "The excellent mix of locations in this portfolio is rarely seen in the market.

“With more than half of the portfolio located in London and the south-east and other strong locations in the south-west, Midlands and [north of England] we believe the pubs represent an excellent opportunity for existing pub operators and new entrants".
