CHILDREN got a taste of life on the high seas during a pirate day.

Year two pupils at Myton Park Primary School, Ingleby Barwick, broadened their knowledge through a visit to the Captain Cook Museum, exploring the Maori culture and singing sea shanties.

Teacher Claire Small, who dressed as a pirate on Thursday, along with her class, said the children thoroughly enjoyed the day.

"We hold days like this either to launch or consolidate a topic," she said.

"At the Captain Cook Museum we learnt about heritage, and we looked at the countries he visited, such as New Zealand.

"On the pirate day, we made treasure maps, sang sea shanties, and learnt about life at sea during Captain Cook's time."

She added: "Events such as this enhance the curriculum, it makes learning memorable and it brings it to life."
