THE annual mayor-making ceremony in Harrogate is to return to its traditional venue.

Like many local events which used to use the town's Royal Hall, it had to be moved elsewhere in recent years because of the venue's £10.7m restoration.

However with the work complete the ceremony will return to the Royal Hall this year, on May 19.

The incoming mayor, Councillor John Fox, said all were welcome to attend.

"As well as having the opportunity to see the Royal Hall by going on one of the planned heritage tours, we would love to see residents and visitors at this civic ceremony."

The ceremony, and the council's annual meeting will start at 5.30pm and entertainment will be provided by the Harrogate High School Concert Band.

Coun Fox and his wife Maggie are life-long Harrogate residents and have two children. Elizabeth and Jonathan and two grandchildren with a third expected in mid-May.

Coun Morris Lightfoot and his wife Gill will become the deputy mayor and mayoress.
