LIBRARY boss Fiona Williams will be using her expertise and experience on a national scale from next month.

Currently the head of libraries and heritage at City of York Council, she will be appointed as president-elect of the Society of Chief Librarians on May 8.

She will hold the post for one year, before holding the post of president for two years.

"I believe passionately in public libraries and their work promoting reading, supporting learning and being that space in the community where people can come together," she said.

"I am really excited by this opportunity to work with national and government bodies to promote libraries and develop better ways that we can all work together. Starting my new role in the Year of Reading is just the icing on the cake."

The society is a local government association made up of the chief librarian of each library authority in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
