This is the moment churches across the North East and North Yorkshire rang their bells for an hour without stopping.

Churches across the UK have today (Monday, September 19) been ringing bells from 10am to 11am.

It follows Church of England guidance that the Royal Household has asked that parish churches ring their bells in tribute.

Her late Majesty, the Queen was the head of the church - which is where the tradition has started.

The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers states: "On the day of the funeral bells should be tolled for the hour immediately prior to the time of the Funeral Service.

"This may afford those an opportunity to ring a quarter peal, but general ringing or tolling would be acceptable."

In the North East, St Cuthbert's Church in Darlington town centre took part and rang its bell for an hour.

In church grounds, a couple from Middleton St George brought biscuits to listen to the bells.

They said they have "an enormous amount of respect for the Queen, though she wasn't a personal influence in our lives".

Meanwhile, St Mary's Church in Richmond, North Yorkshire and The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul in Stokesley were among those also taking part.

A minute of silence was held on Sunday at 8pm.
