A COOK is hanging up his ladle after providing thousands of meals to hospice patients.

Former business executive Paul Carruthers is retiring after nine years working in the kitchens of St Cuthbert's Hospice, in Durham City, helping to prepare food for visitors.

Mr Carruthers took over as cook three years ago, preparing about 7,000 meals a year with the rest of the catering team.

He said: "It's been a delight being able to cook for so many people over the years. I enjoy eating and cooking, and it's been a pleasure to share some of my favourite dishes with people who are either staying at St Cuthbert's or coming into the day hospice.

"I'm going to miss working here, but I now feel it's time for someone else to take over."

Nina Taylor, who attends the day hospice each Wednesday, said: "I really look forward to coming to the hospice and the food is terrific.

"He makes some lovely meals, and will often cook whatever you ask for - and I'm a big fan of the morning scones."

It is the second time Mr Carruthers has retired. He joined Durham-based Hugh Mackay Carpets on leaving school and rose to become the company's managing director, eventually taking early retirement after 37 years with the company.

Hospice chief executive Angela Dinsdale said: "We're very grateful to Paul for all of his hard work over the years.

"Having a nutritious meal is an important part of the day for many of our guests, and he will be missed. We all hope that he has an enjoyable retirement."
