A convicted pervert has been back before the courts after failing to tell police about his stash of re-writable DVDs and failing to declare one of his email addresses.

Paul Metcalfe was convicted in November 2018 after he was found with a vile collection of more than 76,000 child sex abuse images.

As part of his suspended sentence, he was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) and the conditions of the sex offenders’ register.

However, when police visited his east Cleveland home last November, they discovered a number of DVDs which were seized for analysis.

Officers also asked the 62-year-old about his online activity and any email addresses registered to him.

Uzma Khan, prosecuting, said a search of the DVDs showed there was nothing untoward on any of them and police accepted the email account had been set up prior to his conviction but he had still failed to declare it correctly.

Metcalfe, of South View, Loftus, east Cleveland, pleaded guilty to breaching his SHPO and breaching the conditions of his notification order.

Tom Bennett, in mitigation, said both offences were technical breaches of the orders as no further criminal activity had been discovered following the police search and said his client thought he had already told police about the discs.

Judge Jonathan Carroll said: “Back in 2018, you were convicted for serious sex offences in relation to child sex abuse images and that not going away – it will never go away for the foreseeable future.

“That imposes upon you certain restrictions, society imposes that on you because society will not accept that type of behaviour and society will not accept the kind of behaviour by you.

“Whether you like it or not, it is completely and utterly irrelevant, it is up to you to comply with them.”

Metcalfe was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, attend 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days and serve a three-month curfew between 8pm and 8am.

The judge warned: “If you do think about committing a child sex offence and come back before me, you will go to prison immediately.”
