One person was taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on the A1(M) on Saturday.

Motorists faced severe delays in the morning after a vehicle overturned and ended up in the opposite carriageway.

Witnesses reported long queues of traffic in the surrounding area as the emergency services responded to the incident.

What has happened and when

 

Multiple vehicles were involved in a crash on the A1(M) north between junctions 63 and 64 near Chester-le-Street and Washington.

One vehicle overturned and ended up on the southbound carriage.

Have there been any injuries?

 

One male patient was taken to hospital in Gateshead with minor injuries.

What have the services and authorities said?

 

A NEAS spokesperson said, "We received a 999 call at 6:46am to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision on A1 north between junctions 63 and 64, in which one vehicle ended up on the southbound carriage. 

“We sent a clinical team leader, emergency ambulance and two Hazardous Area Response Teams. 

“One male patient was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital with minor injuries."

When will the road reopen?

 

The road is still open for motorists, but those in the nearby area have been warned to expect delays due to lane closures.

Lanes two and three (of three) on the northbound carriageway are now. Lane three is also closed southbound.
