A County Durham petrol station which has been saving motorists a fortune as one of the cheapest in the region has announced another price cut this week.

Prices this year hit all-time high with drivers forking out on average £1.90 a litre in July with North East motorists even facing costs of £2 per litre at some petrol stations.

Prices have begun to fall after reaching their peak with the average cost falling by 12.31p per litre in August, the largest monthly drop on record.

has kept prices lower than competitors over the summer and has now slashed rates again on Wednesday (September 6).

Motorists at the Jet garage at Etherley Moor in Bishop Auckland can expect to pay just 155.7p per litre for unleaded, a massive 13p cheaper than the national average, according to the RAC.

The price of diesel at the County Durham forecourt has also now been lowered to just 173.7p per litre, which is 10p less than motorists can expect on average.

Last month The Northern Echo reported from the Jet Oakley petrol station in West Auckland which sits beside the Etherley Moor forecourt as one of the cheapest in the region as they explained how they were undercutting some of the major retailers.

The low prices will be a relief to motorists as the cost of living continues to hit families.

RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis said yesterday (Tuesday September 6): “There’s no getting away from the fact that fuel can make up a huge chunk of a household’s monthly expenditure alongside energy costs.

“With many people heavily dependent on the car – whether that’s to transport children now new school terms are underway again, or to see friends and family in different parts of the country – drivers need all the help that they can get.

“We urge the incoming Prime Minister to heed our calls for more financial assistance for drivers, such as a deeper cut in fuel duty, and to look carefully at the much more generous packages of help being offered to those in other countries across Europe.”
