Two people have been left seriously injured and needing hospital treatment after a car overturned in the early hours of Sunday (September 4) morning.

A man and woman, both in their 30s, were taken to hospital having sustained serious injuries in the single-vehicle crash on the A174 Parkway near Thornaby at about 4.30am.

Police, ambulance, and fire crews all attended the scene while the man and woman were freed from the grey Volkswagen T-ROC.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for most of the morning while investigators worked at the scene.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson told The Northern Echo: “Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision involving a single vehicle (a grey VW T-ROC) at the Low Lane slip road (B1380) off the A174 Parkway eastbound just before 4.30am today (Sunday).

“A man and a woman - both in their 30s - sustained serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital.

“The vehicle involved in the earlier collision has been recovered and the A174 has now re-opened to traffic.

“We would like to thank any motorists affected by the closure and diversions for their cooperation and understanding.”

A Cleveland Fire Brigade statement said: “Two persons were extricated from vehicle and transported to hospital via ambulance.”

The Northern Echo has contacted the ambulance service for a comment.

The road reopened shortly after 11.30am on Sunday morning and police are now urgently appealing for witnesses to help with their enquiries.

The Cleveland Police spokesperson added: “Enquiries into the collision which happened just before 4.30am on Sunday are on-going and we would appeal for any witnesses/drivers with dashcam from the area to contact Cleveland Police via the 101 number. Please quote reference 158162."
