One person has been left hospitalised after the A1(M) was closed in both directions on Tuesday lunchtime due to a police incident.

The major route was closed shortly after 1.30pm on Tuesday (August 30) after emergency services were alerted to an incident near Junction 58 on the A1(M) near Darlington.

Police, ambulance and the air ambulance attended the scene shortly after while drivers were encouraged to find a different route.

It was initially expected that the road would be closed for a number of hours but reopened shortly after 2.30pm.

One person has been taken to James Cook Hospital by road following the incident.

The exact nature of the incident is not currently known.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 13:22 to an incident on the A1 near to junction 58.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, clinical team leader, one vehicle from our Hazardous Area Response Team and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance.

“One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital by road.”

The Great North Air Ambulance also attended the scene.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: “We would like to thank people for their patience and understanding while the emergency services worked with the scene.”
