Police revealed today that a suspected explosive device on a Redcar beach has yet to be removed after the tide covered the item.

A member of public yesterday spotted a suspected explosive device on the beach at Marske-by-the-Sea.

The item was described as visible in the sand on the area of beach in front of where Hummershill Lane meets Church Howle Crescent.

Access to the beach was restricted for much of the afternoon while police dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said yesterday: “Officers are currently in the area and will be working with partners to arrange a safe disposal of the item.”

It was revealed this morning that the device was not removed, however, explosive experts said they did not have any concern regarding the item.

Police were advised to stand down and since re-visited the scene this morning and the item had not re-emerged.

A spokesperson for Clevland Police said: “The tide was coming in and covering the item at the time it was reported to police yesterday and we sought advice from explosives experts (EOD) who advised police they did not have any concerns regarding the item at that time having had a description and photo of it.

“If we receive further information today that the item is once again visible, we will attend once more and liaise with EOD to ascertain the next steps.”
