Darlington residents have hit out on social media over travel chaos as another main road in the town is set to be closed without warning signs.

In a statement this morning, the council announced that urgent work needs to be undertaken on the A67 from the A66 roundabout at Morton Park leading to Sadberge Road roundabout.

A road closure has been put in place affecting those travelling Eastbound along the road.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We appreciate this is frustrating and may cause delays, we will keep you informed.”

However, residents were quick to hit back over their annoyance at the news.

One person asked: “Is there any main road in Darlington that isn't being dug up at the moment?”

Others have been quick to point out that the road closure was already in affect this morning, but no road-signs were in place.

Alison Etherington commented: “Complete chaos at the roundabout at 9.40. Some warning signage before the the round about on the A66 in both directions would have been useful!!!

“Will be absolute carnage at 5pm!”

Bex Lombard-Earl added: “No diversion signs in place this morning at 6am. At 8am cars were stopping in middle of road on the roundabout as they had no idea where to go.

“Not very well managed or signposted??”

The news comes after just last week, a Darlington business hit out over the road closures, branding them an “absolute shambles.”

Darlington business, The Pasta Shop, said that many customers have been forced to turn away as a result.

A staff member for the business stressed that there had been multiple near misses, two crashes and one death because of the chaos.

The added: “Who's watching these workmen? Why is it taking so long? Firstly they remove all crossing islands and lights without a safe alternative.

“This road is already plagued by HGV's and noise pollution from emergency services. God only knows why they haven't completed it section by section instead of zig-zagging across the road. Now they are digging parts of it back up!''

The roadworks are set to continue onto Outram Street and Duke Street, something The Pasta Shop argues will only create more “disruption to the public and more importantly the local businesses.”
