A NORTH Yorkshire seaside resort has expressed an interest in hosting the next Miss Great Britain contest.

The organisers of Miss Great Britain 2008 are inviting local authorities to bid to host the contest, with the promise of a massive boost for the chosen town.

The pageant was traditionally held every year in Morecambe in Lancashire up until the 1960s.

Last year the contest took place in a London hotel.

Robert de Keyser, owner of Miss Great Britain 2008, said: "Miss Great Britain has its origins as a seaside pageant in the glory days of great British resorts and we are happy to have the chance to take the competition back to its roots.

"We have had phenomenal interest from a number of seaside resorts and look forward to announcing the winning bid later this year."

A spokeswoman said towns including Scarborough, Blackpool, Brighton and Lowestoft had expressed an interest in hosting the competition.

The winning venue will be announced by the organisers in the spring and the pageant will take place in November.

The region tasted success in the competition in 2006 when Preeti Desai, from Guisborough, east Cleveland, won the Miss Great Britain crown.
