Police officers have arrested five males in Darlington after a ‘violent’ incident broke out on the streets of the town.

The incident, which saw a group of males of varying ages fighting in the street, caused alarm among those that live on and near to Westminster Road; the location where the ‘disturbance’ took place.

In the aftermath of the incident, Durham Police has issued an appeal for more information – and, as part of the ongoing enquiries, The Northern Echo has put together everything we know so far about the shocking scenes.

When did the incident take place?

Police officers were called to Westminster Road on Tuesday (August 23) at around 6.45pm following reports of a violent episode in the street.

What has happened?

While the details are relatively brief about the incident, the police have confirmed that a ‘violent disturbance’ broke out on Westminster Road, which featured males of varying ages.

However, no more detail about how things began have been provided at this stage.

Has anyone been arrested?

Yes – Durham Police have said that five people were arrested for their part in the violent incident and remain in police custody where they will be interviewed by officers.

Did anyone sustain any injuries?

From the police statement – there is no suggestion that anyone was seriously injured in the disturbance after the five people were arrested.

What have the police said?

The police issued a full statement on the incident, which read: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a violent disturbance in Darlington yesterday evening.

“The incident happened at around 6.45pm in Westminster Road and involved several males of varying ages.

“Officers quickly arrived at the scene and arrested five people, who remain in police custody where they will be interviewed by officers.”

Detective Sergeant James Woodcock, from the East Neighbourhood Police Team, has also moved to assure residents that they are safe in the neighbourhood.

He said: “This incident occurred in a residential area and has caused understandable concern in the community.

“As a result, we have deployed additional patrols to the area to provide reassurance to residents over the next few days.

“Officers are currently following several lines of enquiry in relation to the incident. We would urge anyone who witnessed the disturbance but has not yet spoken to us to get in touch and pass on any information they may have.”

Has there been any appeal for witnesses?

Yes – the police have issued an appeal and want witnesses to come forward.

Durham Police are now looking for anyone who witnessed the violent incident and has asked anyone who saw anything to call them on 101, extension 202449.
