Excitement is building ahead of Popeyes’ new Metrocentre restaurant opening this weekend.

The fast-food chain is massively well-known in the US, originating in the state of New Jersey 50 years ago this year, but is relatively new to the UK.

Its first UK restaurant opened in Stratford in November 2021 and has soon become a hit with Brits, becoming the busiest Popeyes in the world, beating almost 3,700 other branches.

But for many in the North East the brand is lesser-known and possible customers may not know what is on the menu at the new restaurant.

Popeyes’ Newcastle-born UK Chief Operating Officer Neil Williamson told The Northern Echo: “Anyone who has been to New Orleans will know there’s a real culture of hospitality so what we’re trying to do is be a quick service, fast-food brand with the difference of hospitality, greeting guests at the door and having staff talking to them on the floor.

“Our chicken is all fresh, it’s delivered in from a supplier in Preston. It’s all hand battered and dip-fried to let it free float similar to how fish and chips are cooked, so no two chicken sandwiches look the same.

“We have also brought some products over from New Orleans such as our biscuit, similar to what people here might call a scone but it comes with gravy.

“Other European countries with Popeyes decided not to introduce biscuits and gravy, but we’ve brought them to the UK and they’re really popular here so far.”
