A main road in a North East town has been closed following a serious assault, leaving one person in hospital.

The incident happened at around 4.29pm this afternoon on Yarm Road in Stockton.

The road was closed following the assault and police activity was seen in the area.

A cordon was also soon erected as police enquiries into the incident continued.

Great North Air Ambulance confirmed that they were called to the scene and revealed that one person had been taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for the service said: “Our critical care team were activated at 3.48pm to reports of an assault in Stockton.

“They arrived on scene at 3.54pm and worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient.

“The patient was taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew accompanied by our team.”

A Crime Scene Investigation unit was later on the scene according to reports.

The North East Ambulance Service later revealed that one patient had been transported to the major trauma unit at hospital.

A spokesperson for the service added: “We received a call to 999 at 15:37 this afternoon to reports of a person injured on Grove Street in Stockton. 

“Police attended the scene.  We sent an emergency ambulance crew, a clinical team leader and requested the support of the Great North Air Ambulance, which also attended. 

“ We transported the patient to a major trauma unit."

Cleveland Police later confirmed that a man in his 30s had received a stab wound during the incident.

They also made clear that no arrests had been made but officers were "pursuing several lines of enquiry."

A statement from the force reads: "Officers are currently on and around Yarm Road and Yarm Lane in Stockton after a man in his 30s received stab wounds during an incident earlier this afternoon.

"Police were called to the area at around 3.40pm and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Adjoining roads were cordoned off to allow enquiries to get underway.

"While no-one has been arrested at this stage, a dedicated team of officers is pursuing several lines of enquiry and the incident is believed to be a targeted one - with no current risk to the wider public.

"We would appeal for any witnesses or people with information, dash cam or CCTV who have not yet spoken to police to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number, quoting ref 145223.
