Drastic pictures show how the North East has been affected by prolonged temperatures amid the second heatwave.

The Northern Echo visited Derwent Reservoir on Friday and was met with a scene of drought in parts of the area.

It comes as a weather warning is in place bringing some much needed rain after days of extreme heat and the mercury reaching as high as 30c.

A hosepipe ban is set to be introduced in Yorkshire as it feels the impact of the heatwave, while the North East has so far escaped one.

But at Derwent, this was the scene as the water was way down and land revealed for the first time in years.

Northumbrian Water previously said is not anticipating the need for any restrictions this summer, and added that as an environmentally-responsible company, it is monitoring and carefully managing the resources they take from the environment.

On social media, many took to share pictures and video of Derwent Reservoir.

As cooler temperatures descend on us, thunderstorms and heavy rain is set to hit the North East and North Yorkshire in the next 24 hours.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for the entire region with large swathes of Northern England affected.

In place from midnight tonight until 11.59pm on Tuesday, forecasters have warned to expect a downpour and thunder over this period.
