An alcoholic woman who twice lashed out at police when they tried to arrest her during different drunken rampages has been locked up.

Bernadette Davies smashed up a woman’s car when she got into a row on a garage forecourt and when police attempted to arrest her, she kicked one officer on the knee while he was restraining her.

The 42-year-old was arrested less than two weeks later when she became involved in an altercation in the street – this time she kicked an officer on the shin when he attempted to restrain her.

Teesside Crown Court heard how she was back in trouble again on July 17 when she attacked a man in the street and became racially abusive when officers arrived to arrest her near to the court building in Middlesbrough town centre.

Uzma Khan, prosecuting, said all three offences occurred while the defendant was serving a suspended sentence for affray and possession of a bladed article.

Describing the first incident outside the Esso garage on Park Lane, Middlesbrough, she said: “The defendant started to shout at the woman, she has approached the car, blocking it and telling her she was going to ‘rip her f****** head off’.

“She has then climbed onto the car bonnet, pulled off a windscreen wiper and proceeded to hit the windscreen with it causing several cracks.”

The court heard how the incident had left the victim scared to drive alone and reluctant to take her grandchildren out for the day after the attack on April 15.

In the July incident, Miss Khan said Davies attacked the man, punching him to the ground before branding him a ‘f****** Paki’ when police arrested her.

Davies, of Lytton Court, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting an emergency worker; possession of cannabis; racially aggravated disorderly behaviour; and criminal damage.

Emma Williams, in mitigation, said her client had a longstanding alcohol problem and so far, work with the probation service had failed to help her tackle her addiction.

Judge Howard Crowson sentenced Davies to a total of 11 months in custody after he activated her suspended sentence term.

He said: “It is clear you have had a very terrible time and it is causing problems for you but in turn those problems you are dealing with them through alcohol.”

Davies was also ordered to pay compensation of £128 to the car owner.
