The North East has been crowned the top region in the UK to get your hands on a portion of fish and chips, according to recent research revealed by a leisure expert.

In the data, released by leisure group Parkdean Resorts, has collated research from fish and chip restaurants and takeaways in the UK that considers cost, portion size, and TripAdvisor reviews.

Parkdean’s research found that the North East offers the best overall fish and chips.

The North East offers the cheapest cod in the whole of the UK, with a portion averaging at around £5.57.

Not only that, but fish and chips shops in the North East have 59 per cent of ‘Excellent’ rated reviews on TripAdvisor.

Although the North East bags the top spot, the research also found further positive news for the North of England.

Completing the top three was Yorkshire and the Humber in second, and the North West in third – showing that there are plenty more fish in the sea.

Off the back of the North East’s fish and chips success, The Northern Echo has put together the 11 best chippies in the region, according to Trip Advisor.

We have trawled the depths of the internet for the best in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Teesside, and North Yorkshire – but only in seaside locations.

Here are our findings (in no particular order):

  • Magpie Café, Whitby (four and a half stars) – 8868 reviews
  • Trenchers, Whitby (four and a half stars) – 5151 reviews
  • Oliver’s Fish & Chips, Redcar (four and a half stars) – 750 reviews
  • Colman’s Fish & Chips, South Shields (four and a half stars) – 1755 reviews
  • Lifeboat Fish Bar, Scarborough (five stars) – 706 reviews
  • Hadley’s Fish and Chips, Whitby (four and a half stars) – 1717 reviews
  • The Potted Lobster, Bamburgh (four and a half stars) – 1404 reviews
  • Coastline Fish and Chips, Blyth (four stars) – 745 reviews
  • The Almighty Cod, Hartlepool (four and a half stars) – 1018 reviews
  • Longsands Fish Kitchen, Tynemouth (four and a half stars) – 1165 reviews
  • The Fisherman’s Wife, Whitby (four and a half stars) – 2188 reviews

In our findings, unsurprisingly the Magpie Café in Whitby scored highly in Tripadvisor, raking in exceptional reviews from satisfied customers, garnering four and a half stars from 8868 reviews.

However, the Magpie wasn’t the best in terms of ratings, with Lifeboat Fish Bar, Scarborough, receiving five stars from 706 reviews.  

Other best places include The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh, Coastline in Blyth, firm favourite Colman’s in South Shields, and Longsands Fish Kitchen in Tynemouth.
