Welcome to a summer of fun in Darlington - no matter what your child’s age or interest, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during the holidays

The summer holidays stretch out before us – weeks of sun, relaxation and…. bored kids. But don’t worry, here in Darlington we’ve more than enough to help keep the little ones (and the not-so-little ones!) entertained.

There’s a jam-packed calendar of events this summer and every one of them is free. Always a great way to fill a day, you can bring a picnic or check out some of the town’s cafes and restaurants to make it a memorable day out.

The Northern Echo:

One of the biggest events in the annual calendar is the Pride Weekender – two days of events to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community on August 13 and 14. The weekend starts with the family- friendly Pride Festival, held in the Market Square on Saturday, followed by the Pride picnic on Sunday in South Park.

A full line up on Saturday includes the Pride March to kick off the event at noon, followed by tribute acts from Queen to Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande, live music, street theatre, food and drink, information stalls and activities. The Pride Picnic is a relaxed family event with acoustic music from Tracks Darlington, a drag story tent by Curious Arts, games, bubbles and a rainbow trail.

Returning for the second year, the Urban Street Festival proved a huge hit with teens and tweens when it came to town for three days of action in the Market Square. Taking over the Market Square from Tuesday to Thursday, August 16-18, the event is a celebration of street culture, including breakdancing, skateboarding demonstrations , cycling and live performances.

The Northern Echo:

One for the little ones – a brand new event for this year, Fairytales and Legends Day on August 24 will see the town visited by family-favourite film characters who will roam the streets meeting children, along with special craft activities, before a dazzling live music production in the Market Square from 2pm. Fancy dress is very much encouraged!

Rounding off the summer holidays, the Mish Mash Festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28, brings the music of the world to Darlington, from gypsy folk to flamenco, Afrobeats to Irish dancing. Organised in partnership with Tracks and Big Little Gigs, Mish Mash has interactive workshops and world food stalls alongside the main stage.
