Three male teenagers have died in a road traffic collision and a fourth is fighting for his life after the car they were travelling in crashed in North Yorkshire on Friday (July 29) night.

Emergency services attended the B6268 Masham Road at around 11pm after reports of a one-car collision between Masham and Bedale.

After attending the scene, North Yorkshire Police confirmed on Saturday (July 30) that two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old had been killed in the crash, while another 18-year-old, the driver of the car, had sustained serious injuries.

More than 24 hours on from the tragic incident in North Yorkshire, here is what we know so far about the crash:

What happened and when?

North Yorkshire Police has confirmed that two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old died in a collision on Friday (July 29) at around 11pm, while another 18-year-old is seriously injured in hospital.

The incident on Friday evening involved a grey Alfa Romeo, which the teenagers were travelling in.

North Yorkshire Police believe that this was the only vehicle involved in the crash.

Where did the incident happen?

The crash occurred on the B6268 between Masham and Bedale, just before the Thornton Watlass crossroads turnoff.

What have the emergency services said?

North Yorkshire Police have issued a statement in relation to the fatal incident. 

The statement read: "Around 11pm on Friday (29 July 2022), a grey Alfa Romeo car was involved in a collision on the B6268, Masham Road, near Thornton Watlass, Bedale.

"The vehicle containing four young men was travelling from Bedale towards High Burton. At this stage, we don't believe any other vehicles were involved.

"Sadly three passengers within the vehicle, a 17-year-old man and two 18-year-old men have died as a result of their injuries.

"The 18-year-old man who was driving sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital."

Have the police appealed for witnesses?

Yes - North Yorkshire Police has urged anyone to come forward if they witnessed the collision or know any information about it. 

They have said: "We're appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, may have seen the vehicle in the area prior to the collision or anyone who may have dashcam footage or any other information that could help the investigation.

Have tributes been paid to the teenagers?

Yes - tributes have been paid on social media - but the identity of the teenagers remains unknown. 

At the scene of the crash, floral tributes were left by family and friends yesterday, while debris and sand could still be seen at the crash site.
