A major road in Durham city centre will be partially closed with temporary restrictions until November as gas engineers carry out repairs.

Work is set to begin in South Street in Durham on Monday, August 2 and is expected to go on for as long as 13 weeks.

There will be two-way traffic lights in place as engineers move in to work on the gas pipes under the street, which could cause delays for motorists in the city centre.

Northern Gas say the works are essential to replace an ageing steel gas main to ensure it is safe and reliable for customers. The metal pipe has undergone several emergency repairs recently but will be replaced with a new plastic one.

Drivers are being advised to leave extra time to travel with the traffic lights set to cause disruption.

As the work moves towards the cemetery, there will be more multi-way temporary traffic lights which could add even more time to journeys.

Shaun Williams, Site Manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works.

“However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents and businesses of Durham.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

The company has also said engineers will also need to access some properties on the road to complete the works, and has said its customer services teams will be in touch with residents beforehand.
