A man is in hospital after he was hit by a car near a North East shopping centre, police have confirmed.

The 24-year-old was involved in the incident in Stockton yesterday (July 20).

He was on foot when he was involved in a collision involving the driver of an Audi A3 in Riverside Road, near Castlegate shopping centre.

A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and was later released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Emergency services were called to the scene after it was reported at about 12.55pm.

The pedestrian was taken to James Cook University Hospital with leg and pelvic injuries, and he remains there while receiving treatment.

An investigation is underway.

Cleveland Police has issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

A spokesperson said: "Any witnesses to the incident or anyone who may have dash cam footage which can assist the investigation, is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting incident number 126642."
