BRASS band music filled the air in memory of much-loved music teacher as a commemorative bench was unveiled.

Crowds were in Blackhill and Consett Park in memory of David Jackson who died aged 73 last April after suffering from cancer.

The bench and memorial plaque has been installed near the bandstand where he conducted so many concerts over the years.

As a teacher, Mr Jackson, who was married to Lorraine, spent over 25 years of his career at Consett Junior School.

A father-of-three and grandfather-of-one, he became the bandmaster of the Consett Salvation Army Band, the oldest in the world, at 21 and went on to set up Consett Junior Brass in 1973, and then Consett Brass.

Writing on Facebook about the event on Friday, his son, Marc, said: “The bench in Blackhill and Consett Park is a beautiful tribute to a remarkable man, my Dad, and he would have loved the incredible music and fellowship we've been blessed with this weekend.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen.”
