A callous mother who used a plastic bag to smoother her two-year-old son left a pleading note for her own mother to find.

Evil Carol Hodgson left a sickening note in her Guisborough home after she murdered her son Daniel and made a failed attempt to take her own life.

The 40-year-old wrote: "Mama, sorry you don't want to see this, just ring the police! I am gone, I am so sorry. I love you. xxx".

Teesside Crown Court heard how Hodgson took the premeditated decision to kill Daniel James Hodgson Green on the morning she was due in court for a hearing to discuss his father having access to his child.

Sentencing Hodgson to life in prison, Judge Paul Watson QC said: "She (Hodgson's mother) had found a note in the hallway which read, ‘Just ring the police Mam, don’t go into the bedroom, you don’t need to see it. I love you and I am so sorry’.

“There was another similar note stuck to the bedroom door. Other notes were recovered in which, among other things you said that the only way for you to protect Daniel was to ‘take him with you’ and which, taken together show that you had it in mind that you would kill your son and take your own life.

“There is no doubt but that this was a premeditated killing which had been planned by you in advance. You deliberately killed Daniel and then made a determined attempt to kill yourself which was prevented by the arrival of your mother."

Daniel's heartbroken father, Stefan Green, made a heart-rending personal statement as he watched his former partner jailed for Daniel's murder.

Speaking outside the court, he said: "This tragedy has broken our family, our friends and our community but we will rebuild.

"We never got to make a connection with my son, we never got to see his first steps, hear his first words and now because of the actions of an evil person, a person who should have been one of the two people who he should have felt safest with, there is an entire lifetime of firsts lost."

Alistair MacDonald QC, prosecuting, said Daniel was already dead when paramedics arrived at the scene and despite desperate attempts to revive Daniel he was pronounced dead.

The barrister said she deliberately killed Daniel and then attempted to take her own life but was thwarted when her mother found her in the bedroom.

He said the murder happened on the day that Hodgson was due at a court hearing to look at the future of Daniel and his father's access to his son.

A post mortem was carried out on Daniel and no clear injuries were discovered. Examinations of his body found that the toddler had been smothered and suffocated.

Hodgson will serve a minum of 18 years and four months in prison before she can be considered for parole.

"Hodgson loved Daniel deeply and the remorse for what she has done could not be deeper."
