The Met Office has issued a renewed amber warning for the North East today as temperatures are set to be the hottest on record as we near the end of the week.

Widespread impacts on people and infrastructure are expected, along with “population-wide adverse health effects”

The warning for extreme heat has been issued for much of Southern England but also reaches up to Teesside and parts of the North East while covering all of North Yorkshire.

Today, the weather forecaster has extended the amber warning into Tuesday, as the UK is set to see three days of extreme, record-breaking heat.

The warning, which is in place from midnight on Sunday, July 17 until midnight on Tuesday, July has revealed that temperatures may lead to “potential serious illness or danger to life.”

Changes to working practices and daily routines will also be required, the forecaster has warned.

With “significantly” more people likely to visit coastal areas, lakes and rivers, there will also be an increased risk of water safety incidents.

The Met Office has also said that delays on roads and road closures are also possible, along with delays and cancelations to rail and air travel, along with potential for significant welfare issues.

What’s the weather like this week?

Leading up to Sunday many can expect moderate temperatures with somewhat fresher and cooler conditions.

A maximum temperature of 21c has been predicted for today, and tomorrow conditions are likely to be the same, however some showers, which could be heavy at times, are also likely.

Friday will continue the trend of cooler and fresher temperatures along with cloudier skies and the possibility of showers at times.

Saturday will see warmer temperatures return and the first glimpses of extreme heat thanks to “strong sunshine.”
