Peter Gibson will attempt to stand for a second term as Darlington's MP it has been announced as the Tories have named their candidate for the town.

The MP, who won the General Election in 2019, was re-selected by Darlington Conservative Association on Thursday evening.

Today, the Darlington Conservative Party announced that it had formally approved Mr Gibson as their candidate for the town in the next General Election.

The Northern Echo:

As it was announced, Mr Gibson said “I am thrilled to have been reselected and approved to stand for Darlington MP at the next General Election- whenever that may be.

“I want to thank our Councillors, members and local volunteers for their amazing dedication, support and teamwork over the past three and a half years since my first initial selection.

“On the 4th December 2018, when I was chosen as the candidate for Darlington I promised to work hard, and on the 12th December 2019 when I was elected as Member of Parliament, I promised to work hard.

"I believe we, the entire Conservative team here in Darlington are working tirelessly to deliver a better Darlington for all.

“The last three years have presented us with many challenges, but dispute those we have focused on listening to residents’ concerns and have continually shared our exciting vision for Darlington’s future.

"The building blocks of shared success are being laid, and the journey of levelling up continues at pace.

“I am committed to driving the economic development of our town, making sure we create a safe, clean, and vibrant community, that enables good quality jobs, apprenticeships, and training opportunities so that our residents can increase their earning and learning potential, which I know can boost residents' life chances as well as the prosperity of the whole town.

“We should all proud of the future we’re creating together for our town, and this is just the start”

It comes as Mr Gibson was among many MPs to resign under Boris Johnson's Government earlier this week, prompting the PM's unsurprising resignation.

The once-loyal MP to the Prime Minister resigned as parliamentary private secretary to the Department for International Trade.

In his letter to the PM, he said believed Boris Johnson "to be the best person for our party, our country and for Darlington" but it was "with deep sadness" that he "no longer" felt" that was the case.

However, North East Labour MPs have this week called for a General Election to be held in order to allow the public to "select" their next Prime Minister.
