A teenage girl remains in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car near a school.

The 13-year-old was struck by a Vauxhall Zafira near to the Outwood Academy on Hall Drive in Acklam, Middlesbrough, on Friday.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were sent to the scene and the girl was airlifted by the Great Air Ambulance Service to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

She is believed to have sustained serious head injuries.

However, police have now closed their investigation into the incident after several inquiries.

No arrests have been made.

“Following a thorough investigation including reviewing CCTV and speaking with a number of witnesses, enquiries into a collision on Hall Drive in Acklam on Thursday 30th June have now concluded and the investigation is now closed,” a statement from Cleveland Police read.

“A 13-year-old girl remains in hospital whilst receiving treatment for serious head injuries and we wish her well in her recovery. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.”

The North East Ambulance Service said a patient was airlifted to hospital after the incident.

A spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 2.42pm this afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident on Hall Drive, Middlesbrough.

"We dispatched two specialist paramedics and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

"One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) by air for further treatment."
