The Commonwealth Games will kick off in Birmingham at the end of the month, with the baton relay now heading across the country ahead of the event.

The relay began on Monday (July 4) morning at The Eden Project, Cornwall and will make its way across England before arriving in Birmingham on July 28, for the start of the games.

It will also pass through the North East, visiting major towns and cities across the region on Thursday and Friday (July 14-15) next week.

After passing through Yorkshire, the North East leg will begin in Saltburn on Thursday (July 14) morning and visit places including Middlesbrough, Darlington, Durham, Whitley Bay and Alnwick on its way to Newcastle.

The relay began on October 7, 2021 and has passed through all 72 commonwealth countries on a 294-day journey.

The Commonwealth Games themselves begin on July 28 and run for two weeks to August 8 with athletes from across the commonwealth competing in over 35 different sports.

  • Saltburn-by-the-Sea – 8am
  • Redcar – 8.39am
  • Middlesbrough – 9.57am
  • Middlesbrough Outdoor Velodrome – 10.56am
  • Stockton-on-Tees – 11.48am
  • Darlington – 1.36pm
  • Durham – 3.01pm
  • Seaham – 5.21pm
  • Sunderland – 6.12pm

Friday July 15

  • South Shields – 8.28am
  • Whitley Bay – 9.55am
  • Blyth – 10.38am
  • Alnwick – 2pm
  • Gateshead – 5pm
