Children and families had a fun day out getting up close with emergency vehicles.

The day in Darlington was organised to celebrate the emergency services and give people the chance to find out more about how they operate.

The Market Square was packed yesterday (Saturday) as people turned out to sit on police bikes, try on a firefighter’s helmet or even get a lift in the aerial ladder platform.

The popular event, which was organised by Darlington Borough Council, saw youngsters getting to meet some of the paramedics, police officers and firefighters who provide emergency responses in the town.

There were lots of smiles as they got to dress up in the kit or sit behind the wheel of an emergency vehicle.

A patrol car and bike from Durham Police, a North East Ambulance Service vehicle, a fire engine and aerial ladder platform from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and bikes from Northumbria Blood Bikes were among the attractions.

Councillor Mike Renton, the council’s cabinet member for stronger communities, said: “Our community safety team has developed very close working relationships with the emergency services and other organisations as we all aim to make Darlington a safe place for all to enjoy, and we’re thrilled to be able to come together for this special day to say thanks to all those who work so hard in our communities.”
