A video of ‘urban explorers’ accessing an abandoned plane at Teesside Airport has gone viral after being posted on TikTok.

Thousands of people have viewed the video on the social media site.

It shows a group of about half a dozen people entering the airport site and gaining access to the plane, which is retired and in the process of being recycled.

They can be seen getting onto the plane and walking through the abandoned aircraft, unfolding tray tables and visiting the cockpit.

The Royal Air Maroc Boeing 737 is being stored in a landside field at Teesside Airport and is not on the operational airfield.

Last night, Teesside Airport confirmed there has been no breach of security at the airside.

Yesterday, it emerged £200,000 worth of damage had been caused to the plane after a group of about ten men climbed into the plane on Sunday.

An investigation into that incident is underway and Teesside Airport says it has increased its security at the site.

The person who posted the TikTok video said the group filmed had not caused damage to the plane.

A spokesperson for Teesside Airport said the video clearly showed the individuals did not gain access to the airfield and did not breach the security of the airside of the airport.

He added: “We would encourage anyone who has any information on this incident to come forward and contact the police. Sparta Security is carrying out 24-7 surveillance and we would actively discourage anyone else from trying to gain unauthorised access to our site.

"As this is a live and ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further."

Durham Police initially released a statement saying it was a criminal offence to enter an airfield without permission.

It subsequently amended its statement to clarify that the airfield had not been accessed.

A Durham Police statement said: "Police are appealing for information after an aircraft was damaged at Teesside International Airport.

"The incident occurred on Sunday (June 26) at around 9.30pm.

"It is believed a group of around ten men are thought to have climbed onto the plane, which was inside the airport's perimeter but not on the airfield itself, and caused around £200,000 worth of damage.

"The men made off in several vehicles.

"An investigation is ongoing. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw the men making off of or anyone who witnessed the incident.
