A charity boxing match is taking place this Saturday (July 2) in Darlington.

Darlington’s Karl Jones will be taking part in the event at ASE/Engineers Club on Northgate with all proceeds raised going to Darlington Mind.

Karl usually trains those competing, but this time Karl will also be competing for the Jack Dell Memorial Belt.

30 people will be competing in the event, and it’s hoped that lots will be raised for Darlington Mind.

Karl said: “It’s just for ordinary people who might never have boxed before but are interested in learning to box and give it a go and they also know they’re doing a good thing by raising money for Darlington Mind.

“It’d be really for people struggling to get up and do something they’ve never tried before.

“Boxing has helped me with my own mental health and I feel like by getting involved with things like this I’m giving back. Mental health is a big thing in my heart so I want to do what I can do to give back the best way I can.”

The event is being organised by brothers, Yousif and Malik Ali who run a boxing gym in Darlington.

Yousif said: “We thought a local charity would be good to raise money for because when events raise money for big national charities, local people never see the change or the effect the money raised has had in the community.

“All kinds of people get involved in boxing because it’s not just about hitting something. It’s about stress relief and endorphins.”

Tickets can be purchased from Ali Boxing and Fitness Gym in Darlington or the Be Happy Boxing Events Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/BeHappyBoxingEvents

Tickets are £30 each. Doors open at 6pm with the event includes live music and will finish at 10:30pm. The event has a black tie dress code and entry will be refused to those in casual clothes/sportswear.

The aim is to raise £2000 for Darlington Mind. So far £771 has been raised via the Just Giving page. To donate, visit: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/behappyboxingevent
