Next weekend many will be gathering in Durham to take part in the Durham Miner’s Gala – but will be a scorching weekend, or will spirits be dampened by rain?

The Gala has been confirmed to return this year after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Crowds of 200,000 people are expected to be welcomed to Durham City centre for the trade union-backed event on Saturday, July 9.

Organised by the Durham Miners' Association, the Big Meeting is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and sees brass bands and banners parade through the historic city centre.

However, the day could potentially be ruined if the weather fails to hold up and rain falls on the event.

The Northern Echo:

What will the weather be like for the Miners' Gala?

Looking ahead to next weekend, we sadly don’t get a very complete picture of what the weather will be like hour-by-hour, but we do have a general idea so far.

According to the Met Office’s long range weather forecast, that looks at the weather between Sunday July 3 and Tuesday July 12, the period will start off with some scattered showers.

However, more settled conditions are expected, but the North will still be at risk of occasional spells of “organised cloud and rain.”

Dry and warm conditions will, sadly, be primarily seen in more south-eastern areas and temperatures will feel normal to cool in the Northwest.

However, as we progress through the period, temperatures will gradually climb to above normal levels as more settled conditions become more widespread.

So overall, the Durham Miners' Gala will be generally more settled with temperatures being near to average for this time of year- and luckily, a low chance of rain.

However, conditions are likely to change in the coming days, so this weather is certainly not set in stone.
