One person was taken to hospital following a three-vehicle crash on a major trunk road.

The collision happened on the A19 near Sunderland during rush hour on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the crash, which happened on the northbound carriageway between the A690 Durham Road and A183 in Sunderland, at about 7.30am.

One person was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Part of the road was closed for almost three hours, causing significant disruption to drivers.

More than six miles of tailbacks were reported.

On Tuesday, a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19 shortly before 7.30am this morning.

“We dispatched one ambulance crew and a clinical team leader, and transported one patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 7.30am today (Tuesday) officers received a report of a three-vehicle collision on the A19 northbound between the A690 Durham Road and A183 in Sunderland.”
