The shocking moment an electrical pole ‘exploded’ and burst into flames in a County Durham village – causing a road closure and properties to lose power – has been captured on video.

The incident, which occurred in Great Lumley on Sunday (June 26) evening, saw the piece of equipment, located near Co-op on Front Street, suddenly start sparking before flames start to appear.

Currently, up to 80 properties, both businesses and homes, are without power – with Northern Powergrid estimating that it will be restored at around 9.30pm.

Engineers from Northern Powergrid are on the scene, alongside firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

It’s understood that the fire is extinguished but the engineers are still working to reconnect the power supply, which seems to be affecting Front Street, Riding Hill and High Barnes.

Unfortunately, an electric pole outside the Co-op has exploded and power is off in parts of the village, including our takeaway and restaurant.

"We apologise for any inconvenience. We will update you all as soon as power resumes."
