High street brand JD Sports has announced that it will open the doors of its flagship North East store on Saturday (June 25) – with the shop giving customers a unique experience to what they’re usually accustomed to in their other stores.

The sport, outdoor and fashion retailer will unveil its newest addition to the region when it launches its new Metrocentre store in Gateshead later today.

Providing the North-East with its fix of all the biggest brands including Nike, adidas and The North Face, the 18,000sq ft store will have all local activewear aficionados covered.

The North East’s largest JD Sports flagship will bring more than 40 brands to the shopping centre, alongside a fully automated footwear conveyor belt.

Tech and innovation are at the heart of the new JD Metrocentre store, according to the brand, “providing a fun and unique shopping experience for its core consumers, as well as reflecting the authentic role that JD plays in youth culture today.”

JD Sports first began 1981, evolving to reflect Newcastle’s ever-changing culture, becoming a space where consumers come together to share their passion for streetwear and celebrate self-expression through style.

In honour of the opening, JD Sports will be offering shoppers the chance to customise a pair of trainers, purchased in-store, for free at the brands customisation station throughout the weekend.

There will also be local DJ and producer, Jerome Price, who has worked with artists such as Deadmau5 and has over 60 million streams, there to provide entertainment.

Jerome will be bringing the summer vibes alongside local influencers and social media stars, Nathan and Grace, to kick-off the launch weekend in style.

One lucky shopper, alongside three friends, could also be swapping Gateshead for the iconic party island thanks to a special competition.

Shoppers who spend more than £100 in-store will be in with a shot at winning flights, a stay at the Ibiza Rocks hotel, one of the world’s most popular party hotspots and sought after tickets to the JD Pool Party in Ibiza.

The competition runs until July 9.

JD Sports Fashion plc, said: “JD Sports has occupied a special place on the nation’s high streets for over 40 years. We pride ourselves on embracing the communities that shop with us and the culture that surrounds us, and this new Metrocentre store embodies that commitment.”

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, senior asset manager for Metrocentre, added: “It’s fantastic to unveil the new flagship JD Sports store, a truly exceptional fitout from one of our leading brands. The store is set to be the largest in the region, providing an upgraded destination for streetwear and sports apparel from leading brands such as Nike, Adidas, and North Face.

“The opening follows the recent launch of H Beauty in lower Town Square earlier this month with other exciting developments in the pipeline. Major occupiers continue to invest in Metrocentre as the leading regional destination for retail, hospitality, and leisure.”

JD Sports is at 23A – 25 Platinum Mall, Metrocentre, Gateshead NE11 9YG, and will open Monday to Friday 9am-9pm, Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 11am-5pm.
