Students at a Durham school have taken part in a 5k fundraising run in a bid to raise funds for a charity helping a fellow pupil with a condition which means she lives her life in ‘constant pain’.

More than 120 Year 10 students at North Durham Academy have held a 5k cross country walk, jog and run to raise funds for Burning Nights, a charity supporting one of their peers who is suffering with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

CRPS can cause suffers to experience persistent, severe, and debilitating pain. According to Burning Nights it affects around 16,000 people in the UK and can develop after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack, but the pain is out of proportion with the severity of the initial injury.

Lani Stobbart, a Year 10 pupil at the academy first experienced symptoms in November 2020, lived without diagnosis until mid-2021 and now lives her life in constant pain.

Lani said: “Throughout this time I’ve struggled like never before, my life was seemingly flipped entirely upside down. I have faced and continue to face many challenges that affect my day-to-day life, leaving me frustrated and upset.”

The students have raised £125 so far and hope to raise more through an online fundraiser.

School Principal Mark Gray said: “What a wonderful sight it was to see so many Year 10 students, so many staff and members of our local police community support team out to support such a worthy cause.

“All participants displayed such determination in very hot conditions to support Lani and to raise money for Burning Nights CRPS.
