The North East is the cheapest part of the country to buy a home, with buyers expected to shell out £155,000 on average.  

New figures revealed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) this week (June 22) have revealed the cheapest and most expensive areas in the country to buy a home after average prices went up by 10.7 per cent in 2021.

In the North East, Northumberland topped the list as the most expensive county with homebuyers paying £234,410 on average for a property.

County Durham came out as the cheapest part of the region with homes going for an average price of £155,427.

But the North East also has some bargain properties which could be ideal for first time buyers wanting to take a step onto the property ladder.

In the Newport area of Middlesbrough, buyers could snap up a house for as little as £53,000

And five of the North East locations are in the cheapest ten places for homebuyers in England and Wales.

  5. Hirst, Ashington, Northumberland - £72,186
  6. Berwick Hills & Pallister, Middlesbrough - £77,773
  7. Victoria, Hartlepool – £78,233
  8. Isabella, Blyth, Northumberland - £81,181
  9. Middlesbrough Central - £81,953
  10. Ashington Central, Northumberland - £83,442
