If you’re in a pub quiz team in Durham – you may not know that you’re in great company after the historic city was named as the pub quiz capital of the UK – beating the likes of Wakefield, Salisbury and Preston.

New analysis, which has been conducted by online gaming platform Hearts-Challenge, has revealed that the County Durham location definitely has the numbers when it comes to the weekly pub quiz, with the highest number of pubs offering quizzes per 100 thousand people.

Through the study, Hearts-Challenge examined the number of pubs that offer quiz nights in more than fifty of the biggest areas of the UK.

The study revealed that Durham has the highest number of pubs offering quizzes, with a whopping 70.73 pub quizzes per 100 thousand people.

The cathedral city has approximately 24 pubs offering quiz nights, combined with its population of an estimated 50 thousand people: making the city the pub quiz capital of the UK.

Other popular locations in the analysis were Chichester in second, Wakefield third and Salisbury in fourth.

However, it seems that the North East of England come out on top when it comes for pub quizzes after Sunderland ranked sixth with 29.26 pub quizzes per 100 thousand people, while Carlisle placed seventh, with 26.47.

A spokesperson for Hearts-Challenge.com commented on the findings: “Pub quizzes are a fun and thought-provoking way to keep people entertained, but most notably a fantastic way to engage with the local community. Whether you remember trivial facts or not, quiz nights allow you to enjoy yourself while working out your brain and socialising with your peers.

This study provides a great guide into the most prominent quiz cities across the UK, with Durham taking the top spot by a landslide.”
