Temporary traffic lights and road closures will be in place in a County Durham town after it was announced that essential gas work would be carried out at the start of next month.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) announced that it would be replacing ageing metal pipework in Ferryhill from the start of July – but has also noted the disruption this will cause.

The work on Broom Road, Ferryhill, which is in partnership with Durham County Council, will start on July 4 and is expected to last for 16 weeks.

During the four-month period, the gas operator has confirmed that several traffic management measures will be put in place.

From July 4, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Broom Road from the Junction of Dean Road to the junction of Raby Road for around three weeks.

Following this, from July 25, there will be a road closure in place for five weeks on Broom Road, from the junction of Raby Road to the junction of Wood Lane.

Once work is complete on Broom Road, the next phase will begin on Church Lane from September 5, where there will be a road closure in place between the junction of Lime Road and Church Road for around three weeks.

Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place.

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Steven Storey, site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Ferryhill.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
